The West Virginia Democrat, minority leader of the House Ground Transportation Subcommittee, indicated he wants to study ways to track driver hours other than with paper logs.
An early version of the safety bill that just cleared Congress contained a proposal that could have led to mandatory onboard recorders on some trucks. Rahall said that provision was cut from the bill because onboard recorders may not be the only way to track hours.
Proposed revisions to the current hours of service rules are now being reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget. The proposal, which sources indicate may contain its own recommendations on tracking hours, is expected to be made public within a month.
