The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. reports that although the bill is on today's schedule, the House is running behind. The bill, HB 676, may not come up for a vote until Friday or Monday.
Just having the bill scheduled for a vote was a major step. Two years ago, similar legislation stalled in the calendars committee.
Rep. Carl Isett, the bill's sponsor, of Lubbock, TX, said his motives in introducing the bill were entirely about safety. "I drive 30 to 35,000 miles each year. I see the interactions between cars and trucks and I have to pass these trucks on two-lane highways," Isett says.
