Election officer Michael Cherkasky wants to delay mailing ballots until Nov. 2. They were supposed to be sent Sept. 14. This follows weeks of arguing over who should pay for the federal oversight of the election.
Running for president are James Hoffa, son of infamous Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa; Tom Leedham, who heads the union’s warehouse division; and John Metz, director of its public employee division.
The new election was ordered when former union President Ron Carey was discovered to have allegedly used Teamsters union money for his campaign. He was barred from running again, but has denied any wrongdoing. The rerun election has already been delayed several times. Cherkasky’s proposed schedule would reportedly have a new president in place by the end of the year.
