Freightliner Trucks’ 122SD severe-duty model has gone into full production at its Santiago, Mexico, plant. The truck replaces the Coronado SD, which it resembles, as the builder’s “cornerstone” vocational vehicle, according to Mary Aufdemberg, Freightliner’s director of product marketing.
Introduced in March, the long-nose 122SD has a 122-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab dimension, and features extra-strong chassis components for gross vehicle weight ratings of up to 92,000 pounds and combined weight ratings of up to 160,000 pounds.
It is engineered to haul heavy, oversized loads and can be configured for a variety of severe-duty applications such as logging, oil and gas field services, concrete mixing, heavy-haul, crane, dump, vocational on-highway, and towing and recovery.

The 122SD is available in truck or tractor versions and joins the 114SD and 108SD in Freightliner’s vocational lineup.
The 122SD has a durable, non-corrosive aluminum cab framed with e-coated steel members, and meets stringent A-pillar impact, rollover and back wall impact tests, she said. Strong adhesives and special rivets further reinforce the ergonomically designed cab’s durable structure. The chassis features a broad offering of vocational suspension choices and single- or double-channel frame rails with tensile strength of up to 120,000 psi.
The 122SD is available with Detroit DD16, DD15 TC, DD13, and Cummins ISX15 diesels with up to 600 horsepower and 2,050 pounds-feet of torque. Detroit engines include Detroit Virtual Technician to help users track real-time maintenance notifications and schedule service remotely for improved operational efficiency. Transmission options include Allison automatic, Eaton manual and Eaton UltraShift Plus automated gearboxes.
“The 122SD is the most powerful vocational truck we have in our line-up,” Aufdemberg said. “Every inch of the 122SD is geared to give our customers extreme performance combined with efficiency and reliability for the lowest total cost of ownership.”
The 122SD has standard and optional enhancements that contribute to uptime and dependability, such as a durable, non-corrosive aluminum cab reinforced with e-coated steel, severe-duty front cab mounts, and hood durability enhancements for severe-duty environments, she said. Exterior options include heavy-duty West Coast mirrors, LED headlights, one-piece skid plate, lower radiator rock guard, and custom chrome accents.
