West Virginia says its efforts to slow down trucks on steep grades on I-64 and I-68 are a success.
Enforcement efforts were increased last year after fatal accidents happened on both stretches of highway. Interstate 64's Sandstone Mountain and I-68's Cheat Lake Mountain are both 5 miles long with a 7% grade, the maximum allowed on interstate highways. A mandatory truck pull-off was built on I-68, and another is planned for the top of the Sandstone Mountain grade.
Speed surveys on the two mountains are encouraging, the Division of Highways said last week. Fewer trucks are starting their descents at 60 mph or faster (The speed limit is 50 mph on the I-68 stretch and 45 mph on I-64). In addition, truckers are using the escape ramps less.
