Republic Services has added 11 compressed natural gas trucks to its fleet of waste collection vehicles serving Gardena, Calif., and surrounding communities.
The CNG trucks will replace older diesel-powered trucks and bring the total number of natural gas vehicles operated by Republic to 176.
Nationwide, Republic Services operates more than 2,200 CNG vehicles as well as 38 natural gas fueling stations.
"These new vehicles support our efforts to reduce carbon emissions from our fleet vehicles," said Ron Krall, area president of Republic Services. "It means that almost 200 of our collection vehicles serving the Gardena and surrounding areas are fueled by CNG, which aligns with Republic's long-term sustainability strategy."
Republic operates the 8th largest vocational fleet in the country, according to the company, and has put in place initiatives to reduce its overall fuel usage which includes a commitment to operating CNG-powered trucks.
In the company’s 2014 Sustainability Report, it set a goal of reducing fleet greenhouse gas emissions by 3% by 2018.
