Truck Crossings into the U.S. Increased Last Year

The number of commercial truck crossings into the United States from Canada and Mexico totaled 10.7 million in 2012, 3.6% more than in 2011, according to a new figures released by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The number of commercial truck crossings into the United States from Canada and Mexico totaled 10.7 million in 2012, 3.6% more than in 2011, according to a new figures released by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The increase follows a 1.7% rise from 2010 to 2011 after four years of declines from 2005 to 2009, a period that includes the recent recession.

The Detroit area saw the highest number of trucks crossings the northern border into the U.S., followed by Buffalo-Niagara Falls, Port Huron, Mich., and Blaine, Wash.

At the U.S. border with Mexico, Laredo had the highest number of truck crossings into the country, followed by Otay Mesa, Calif., El Paso, Texas, and Hidalgo, Texas.

The report also shows that 156 million people crossed into the U.S. from Mexico in personal vehicles or as pedestrians in 2012, a 3.5% increase from 2011. Also, 62.4 million people entered the U.S. from Canada in personal vehicles or as pedestrians in 2012, a 4.7% increase from 2011.
