International Brake Check Day, sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, will be held tomorrow, Sept. 6.

Roadside enforcement officers from across Canada and the U.S. will conduct 16 hours of random brake system checks on commercial trucks as part of 2000 Operation Air Brake. The effort is designed to promote a greater awareness of the need for drivers and trucking companies to make sure their vehicles' air brakes are properly adjusted and free of defects.
Data from the May 3 Brake Check Day, one of two other unannounced brake check days scheduled in 2000, revealed that 13.7 percent of trucks inspected in Canada and 20.2 percent of trucks inspected in the U.S. were placed out of service because of brake defects.
