Rocketail XR is an upgrade of the Rocketail aerodynamic systems for reducing tail-end drag on semi-trailers. It addresses the problem of aerodynamic trailer boat tails sustaining damage on impact with loading docks or other objects.

The new Automatic Collision Retraction feature allows Rocketail’s Wings to instantly retract, then rebound into position, upon contact with fixed objects such as fences, walls, or other vehicles.

Rocketail XR also includes a more efficient Wing for enhanced stability at highway speeds.

Viewed from above, you can see how Rocketail XR automatically retracts when the back of the trailer makes impact with an obstacle.

In addition to the side wings, the Rocketail system features a fairing on top of the back of the trailer. Fuel economy testing done by MVT Solutions shows fuel savings of 3.36% for the system – and 9.98% when combined with trailer skirts and eco flaps.

“We have always known that active tail-aero systems which extend into the wake behind the trailer are by far the most effective in reducing drag,” said Jesse Regan, Rocketail founder and CTO, in a press release. “At the same time, those benefits have been quickly undercut by damage caused when their fixed, immovable panels run into things. With our ACR system, Rocketail’s XR Wings retract and rebound on contact, eliminating the risk of incidental damage.”

Like the original Rocketail, the system's wings automatically deploy and retract with the closing and opening of trailer doors, with no action required by the driver.

Rocketail also recently received formal approval from the California Air Resources Board as a CARB-approved device for upcoming GHG2 emissions and fuel economy regulations.

Rocketail is designed to last the life of the trailer with minimal to no annual maintenance, according to the company.

The new upgrade will be on display at the ATA's Technology & Maintenance Council annual meeting in late February.
