The Pennsylvania State Police issued 382 citations during a one-day enforcement detail that focused on inspecting commercial vehicles along rural roads and non-interstate highways in the state.
The Commercial Motor Vehicle Commonwealth Rural Roads and State Highways detail, or CRASH, was conducted Nov. 25 by members of state police motor carrier enforcement teams.
The citations included 246 written for commercial vehicle defects and 114 for driver violations. In addition, 91 commercial vehicles and 21 commercial vehicle drivers were pulled out of service for violations.
"Data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration indicate that close to 75 percent of fatal big truck crashes and more than 70 percent of all crashes involving commercial motor vehicles take place on non-interstate roads," said Frank E. Pawlowski, commissioner.
Lt. Raymond J. Cook, commander of the state police Commercial Vehicle Safety Section, said the department will conduct similar enforcement details during 2009.
