Orbcomm Launches First Phase of New Generation of Satellites
Orbcomm this week successfully launched six next generation OG2 telecommunication satellites aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, to provide faster data systems to customers and increasing the company’s overall network capacity for customers in trucking and other fields it serves.
The OG2 satellites are more advanced than its current OG1 satellites and will provide existing customers with significant enhancements, such as faster message delivery, larger message sizes and better coverage at higher latitudes, while significantly increasing network capacity, accordign to the company.
The launch was originally set for May but was delayed due a series of problems with the rocket, satellite payload integration and weather conditions.
After an initial health check, the satellites will undergo extensive in-orbit testing to verify that all subsystems are properly functioning. The satellites are expected to be providing full commercial machine-to-machine messaging and automatic identification services within the next 60 days.
The company anticipates launching the remaining eleven OG2 satellites and enhanced OG2 services as early as the end of the fourth quarter of 2014 to complete its next generation constellation of satellites.
Orbcomm provides machine-to-machine services by means of a global network of low-earth orbit satellites and accompanying cellular partners for two-way data communication services that track, monitor and control mobile and fixed assets in the commercial transportation, heavy equipment, industrial fixed assets, marine and homeland security markets.
