The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reportedly planning to put retreaded truck tires to the test.
According to Tire Business, NHTSA plans to see how commercial retreads compare to new truck tire standards.
The action was prompted by the Transportation Recall Efficiency, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act, which was passed following tread separation incidents that led to the recall of Firestone light truck tires.
Some retreaders worry that the testing could lead to a requirement that all commercial retreads would have to be tested for performance. Many retreaders are small companies who would not be able to afford such testing, according to the publication.
Twice in the past five years, the agency has considered a study of truck retreads in collaboration with the trucking and tire industries, Tire Business reports, but has backed off because of lack of funding.
