New York State plans to erect more signs to steer sleepy truck drivers to rest areas.
The signs, meant to reduce fatigue-related accidents, could appear this spring in as many as 70 locations along the New York State Thruway and other heavily traveled highways.
The signs will alert truck drivers of a nearby parking area with at least 20 parking spaces that can accommodate a truck with a 53-foot trailer.
The state Assembly last year approved legislation requiring the signs, but the bill's sponsor, Assemblyman Paul Tokasz, agreed to let the DOT and Thruway Authority come up with their own programs.
"Truck stop parking signs on the Thruway and other heavily traveled highways is an important, relatively easy way to promote safety," Tokasz said.
