A New Jersey man who worked for New England Motor Freight was charged Friday in an alleged scheme in which he stole $6 million from the trucking company to pay for what prosecutors say was a lavish lifestyle.
Albert Thomas was in charge of registering company trucks in various states. Prosecutors claim from 2004 through 2013 he submitted registration requests for trucks that were previously registered and then stole the money intended for the registrations.
“He just filed paperwork for false registrations and took the cashiers check,” Union County Acting Prosecutor Grace Park told WCBS radio. “Checks that were supposed to cover the amount for those registration costs and pocketed them. So it’s a relatively simple scheme but it turned out to be a fraud of a large amount of money.”
The money was allegedly used to buy a luxury vehicle, rent a vaction home on the Jersey Shore and hire a personal trainer, among other uses, according to prosecutors.
If convicted on the charge of second-degree theft by deception Thomas could face up to ten years in prison.
