Mack Trucks is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Granite, LR Pinnacle, TerraPro and Titan trucks for an issue involving a connection between the driveshaft and rear axle. The company is also recalling certain 2016 and 2017 Mack Granite and TerraPro trucks for a steering shaft problem similar to a recently issued Volvo recall.

For the driveshaft recall, the number of trucks potentially involved is 20,741 vehicles manufactured from Sept. 1, 2011 to April 30, 2014 with a Mack proprietary axle. For trucks with the steering shaft issue, Mack is recalling 1,318 vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the cap nut that retains the interaxle driveshaft yoke to the rear axle input shaft may become loose. If the nut comes off, the yoke can separate from the axle input shaft and cause the driveshaft to disconnect. This can disable the vehicle and result in debris on the road, according to the NHTSA recall report.

To remedy the problem, Mack will replace the cap nut and inspect the threads on the input shaft. If the threads are damaged, the input shaft will be replaced.

The steering shaft issue is related to a Roll Pin that may be missing at the junction block on the Willi Elbe brand two piece steering shaft in certain trucks. If the roll pin is missing, the steering shaft may separate resulting in a complete loss in steering. The same issue was found in Volvo VNL, VNM and VNX truck models for which Volvo Trucks issued a recall of nearly 16,000 trucks.

Mack will inspect the steering shafts and replace them if the roll pin is missing.
