Louisiana Council Wants Slower Trucks
A panel created by the Louisiana state Legislature voted to recommend slower speed limits for trucks on four-lane highways – but it was far from a unanimous vote
A panel created by the Louisiana state Legislature voted to recommend slower speed limits for trucks on four-lane highways – but it was far from a unanimous vote.
The report of the Council on Automobile Insurance Rates and Enforcement will go to the Legislature, but the vote was 5-4 on a panel that includes a trucking company owner, reports the Associated Press.
District Attorney Earl Taylor of St. Landry Parish joined trucking company owner Tom O’Neal, Jim Champagne of the state highway safety commission and Kay Covington of the Office of Motor Vehicles in voting against the report. They say there is no evidence that making trucks drive 5 mph slower than cars is safer.
The majority, however, agrees with state police Capt. Danny Baxter: “A slower truck is a safer truck.”
The debate is expected to be repeated in the Legislature sometime this month.
