The Georgia Department of Transporation is seeking public comments on a proposed highway improvement project that would add two commercial vehicle lanes along I-75 northbound from the I-75/I-475 Interchange in Monroe County, ending near the SR 20 Interchange in Henry County.

The proposed I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes project is intended to improve mobility and safety for freight operators and passenger vehicles. It would result in the construction of two barrier-separated commercial vehicle-only lanes northbound along I-75 from approximately the I-475/I-75 Interchange near Macon to the McDonough area, Georgia DOT said. The new lanes will be non-tolled and will span five counties: Henry, Spalding, Butts, Lamar, and Monroe. The total length of the project is approximately 41 lane miles.

Georgia DOT said in addition to safety and mobility improvements, adding commercial vehicle lanes along this route would modernize freight infrastructure and operations to grow the economy, increase competitiveness, and improve quality of life for Georgia residents.

The I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes project is one of the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP) projects Georgia DOT has determined can be accelerated to open to traffic nearly two years earlier than originally scheduled. Accelerating this project accommodates growth in commercial vehicle traffic faster and supports the Port of Savannah’s future expansion.

In order to evaluate the impact of the project on residents and drivers in the proposed areas, the CVL project team is hosting a virtual open house to get public commentary and where interested parties can updated project information. (More information about the project is available at the open house website.) Comments must be submitted by Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020. Questions about the project can be submitted to 75CVL@dot.ga.gov or by calling the project hotline at 678-528-7275.
