Professional truckers should not be taking the anti-smoking drug Chantix, according to a warning issued last week by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
According to published reports, the agency issued a warning Thursday advising those giving DOT physicals to not qualify anyone currently using this medication.
The warning came after the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a nonprofit watchdog group, released a study attacking the drug because of its links to seizures, vision problems, dizziness, heart irregularity, diabetes and more than 100 accidents, including 28 road traffic accidents.
The Federal Aviation Administration also banned the drug for pilots and air traffic controllers.
Pfizer, which makes Chantix, said the report's findings were not inconsistent with the possible side effects already listed on the medication's label.
