Federal highway administrator Mary E. Peters has urged drivers to follow safe driving habits around work zones during the upcoming road construction season.
Recommended safety tips include slowing down, obeying road crew flaggers and not tailgating. The complete list of ten safe driving tips is available at www.fhwa.dot.gov/safetytips.
Work zone fatalities have increased 48% since 1997 according to Peter’s agency. In 2003, work zone accidents claimed 1,028 lives and injured 41,239 others. Four out of five people killed in work zones are either drivers or passengers.
To support Peter’s call for safe work zone driving, deputy administrator Rick Capka helped launch National Work Zone Awareness Week near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge construction project outside Washington, D.C. Also participating were the American Assn. of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the American Traffic Safety Services Assn., the American Road and Transportation Builders Assn. and the Associated General Contractors.
