Led by Con-Way Southern Express (CSE), all three less-than-truckload operating units of Con-Way Transportation Services Inc., a subsidiary of CNF Inc., have received safety awards from the American Trucking Associations
(ATA) 2002 Truck and Industrial Safety Contest.
Con-Way Southern Express, based in Ft. Worth, Texas received the ATA President's Trophy for its low incidence of vehicle and employee accidents. The company received first-place awards in two categories: fewest accidents in 100 million-mile plus local miles driven, and lowest employee accidents for companies with 1,001 to 5,000 employees.
The company recorded a one-year drop of 17% in its preventable and non-preventable accident rate with the number of actual injuries dropping 16%. The company's safety programs and record of safety initiatives was also judged to be the best in its category.
Con-Way Western Express (CWX), based in Buena Park, Calif., won first place in the 50 to 100 million line haul miles driven category for the lowest accident rate of any LTL carrier. The company also received a second place award for the number of local miles safely driven.
Con-Way Central Express (CCX), based in Ann Arbor, Mich., received first-place recognition in the 50 to 100 million local miles driven category for its safety record and a first place award for having the lowest overall injury frequency rate of any LTL carrier with 5,000 or more employees. The company also received second place honors in the over 100 million linehaul miles driven category.
The safety contest has been conducted by the ATA for more than 50 years and honors drivers and other employees who operate in a safe manner. Data gathered for the contest is used by the trucking industry in the development of new safety programs.
