Metered loading zones could become a reality in Vancouver.

The city is looking at how to better use road space as part of its Greenest City Action Plan, a ten-year action plan addressing Vancouver's environmental challenges. Perhaps the biggest adverse effect will be on businesses and truck drivers.


Councilor Andrea Reimer says metered loading zones for commercial traffic works in cities with space issues like Manhattan. However, the idea is still years away and Reimer says a pricing system needs to be worked out.

The Greenest City Action Plan was approved by Vancouver's city council last week. The parking strategy is just one aspect of a 160-plus page report.

Some say Vision Vancouver's green plan is going too far. Councilor from the NPA, a local political organization, and mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton says these are the types of ideas that are driving people in Vancouver crazy.

She says the city's parking strategy means drivers will eventually have to pay to park anywhere. She claims the Greenest City plan is full of hidden taxes and points out the mayor hasn't disclosed its cost.
