President Bush intends to nominate Jeffrey William Runge to be Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to a White House announcement.

Runge, a facility physician and assistant chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Carolinas Medical Center, is considered an expert in motor vehicle injury care and prevention, the White House said.
NHTSA is the Department of Transportation agency that regulates motor carrier equipment for safety.
Runge served at NHTSA before, as a fellow in 1996, when he received the Highway Safety Leadership Award from the agency. He serves on professional and civic boards, including the Board of Advisors of the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center. He is a resident of North Carolina, and graduated from the University of the South and the Medical University of South Carolina.
