Bad tires and broken springs were among the most frequent violations observed Thursday at one Roadcheck point in Massachusetts.
Fatigue and hours-of-service violations also were common problems.
Sgt. Norman O. Anger, who works for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and has been conducting commercial vehicle inspections more than two decades, says he believes trucks are much safer today than 20 years ago. Anger took part in Roadcheck 2001 in Massachusetts. For three days, he and other officers conducted random inspections, with specially trained troopers checking tires, brakes, driver's logs and a variety of other items.
“The perception on the road is that trucks are crummy and the drivers are no good,” Anger said. “But that's not true.”
