The American Transportation Research Institute and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are asking motor carriers for their input on use of advanced safety technology.

The two agencies are currently collaborating on the design of field tests for onboard safety systems The goal is to generate data and analyses that will allow carriers to improve investment decision-making on safety systems such as lane departure warning, collision warning, and stability control systems for commercial motor vehicles.
During the last several years, FMCSA has partnered with the trucking industry to test and evaluate these systems. "This latest initiative provides an important opportunity for trucking industry stakeholders and FMCSA to better understand the role of OSS in improving safety," says an ATRI statement.
As part of this initiative, ATRI is conducting a confidential survey of motor carriers, focusing on OSS use and related issues. The responses will be used to design a field test blueprint that will generate meaningful data, allowing industry stakeholders to better understand the impact of OSS on safety and operations.
