Alabama Moves to Expand Container Capacity at Port of Mobile
The Alabama State Port Authority finalized its purchase this week of two industrial properties including a 35-acre tract fronting the seaport’s channel and a 63-acre industrial tract within one mile of the harbor for expansion.

The Alabama State Port Authority finalized its purchase this week of two industrial properties including a 35-acre tract fronting the seaport’s channel and a 63-acre industrial tract within one mile of the harbor for expansion.
Both properties are adjacent to the Port Authority’s Choctaw Point Complex at the Port of Mobile and near Interstate 10, Interstate 65 and a five Class 1 railroads, along with inland waterway connections.
“The riverfront tract would support much needed expansion land for its rapidly growing container terminal, while the industrial tract provides additional acreage to support warehousing, distribution and light manufacturing applications,” the authority said in a statement.
The Journal of Commerce reports the expansion will increase the terminal’s annual capacity to 1 million 20-foot container equivalent units. Last year, the authority handled more than 224,000 TEUs.
