Two Con-Way Transportation Services driver sales representatives – one a former national and grand champion and the other a rookie competitor – captured first place honors at the National Truck Driving Championship
held this past weekend in Tampa, Fla.
Twelve other Con-Way drivers had Top 10 finishes within their equipment classes at the competition. The company operates a national network of three less-than-truckload (LTL) regional trucking companies.
Bob Dolan, a Con-Way Central Express driver who works out of the company's service center in Allentown, Pa., won national champion honors in the Straight Truck Class. A regular national competitor, in 1990 Dolan won Straight Truck honors and was named Grand Champion for the entire competition. He also won national champion honors in 1999.
In his first national competition, Mark Church placed first in the Five-Axle Flatbed Class. Church works out of the Con-Way Southern Express service center in Kernersville, N.C.
"Con-Way sent more LTL drivers to the competition than any single carrier, and it is extremely gratifying that we were the only company with two national champions in the eight categories. Bob and Mark clearly demonstrated how they have mastered their craft. Their knowledge, skills and safety records are exceptional. Combined, they have driven almost three million miles without an accident," said David S. McClimon, president of Con-Way.
Each winning driver received a plaque, gold belt buckle and a $1,000 check from the American Trucking Assns. (ATA) who put on the event.
