Well-known in the industry for his wealth of knowledge, folksy style and straight talk, Tom Berg covered vocational and medium-duty applications, maintenance and alternative fuels for Heavy Duty Trucking for several years.
He is a commercial driver’s license holder and a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Truck Writers of North America and 11 Jesse H. Neal honors.
He has covered trucking since 1978.

The “Hiring Military Veterans” feature in the current issue of Heavy Duty Trucking was an easy assignment for me to take on, because I was in the Army from 1965 to ’67 and afterwards went to work “in the real world” – anywhere outside the service. This Strick trailer is part of intermodal history going back more than 50 years. It was one of a large group bought by the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway for coast-to-coast Flexi-Van service it ran with the New York Central System. This particular trailer was spotted in 2004 in Omaha, Neb., after it was retired from piggyback service.
