Trailer Air Disc Brake Closes Cost Gap With Drums

Meritor Wabco has extended its PAN air disc brake family in North America with the introduction of the PAN 22, the first advanced single-piston air disc brake designed for North American commercial trailers
with 22.5-inch wheels and axles rated to 22,000 pounds.
Currently available as a trailer OEM option, the new brake was demonstrated in Orlando for journalists and fleet customers in advance of the Technology and Maintenance Council meeting this week.
The single piston air disc brake family will also be in tractors, trucks and buses, given its compact design and low weight offer operational advantages.
The PAN 22 combines best-in-class braking torque output with the low weight and long pad life.
At 79 pounds including pads, the PAN 22 weighs less than any other air disc brake in its class. It also delivers powerful braking torque performance - up to 24,000 Nm. It has larger, thicker pads than competitive designs, which results in longer pad replacement intervals.
The PAN 22 incorporates the same single-piston clamping unit design used in Meritor Wabco's PAN 17 and PAN 19 air disc brakes. With just 18 parts, the single-piston clamping unit helps reduce weight and complexity and allows for a compact design that easily adapts to axles, wheels and suspensions. It compensates for taper wear and enables optimal pad wear utilization. The encapsulated guiding system with metal protective covers enhances the PAN 22's reliability and durability.
"This new brake family further closes the cost-gap between air disc brakes and drum brakes," said Jon Morrison, president and general manager of Meritor WABCO. "It's ideal for customers who want the outstanding stopping performance, directional stability, and high fade resistance of an air disc brake but at a life-cycle cost that adds value to trailers."
