Pam Whitfield and Don Jacobson have written the book "Roadcookin': A long haul driver's guide to healthy eating," which addresses how long-haul truckers can deal with weight, heart, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes through nutritional changes.

"Our research shows that 86 percent of truckers are overweight while 55 percent are obese," says Whitfield, a registered dietitian, "compared to statistics reported by the Centers for Disease Control that state that Americans are 66 percent overweight and 33 percent obese."

"But, they are out on the road all alone, and that makes it tough. That's why we wrote Roadcookin' -- to offer drivers support and help them make lifestyle changes before it's too late," Jacobson said.

The layout of the 226-page book explores weight and health concerns to attack bulging beltlines and out-of-line lab results. Roadcookin' helps people modify their meal plans.

Roadcookin' has a 28 Day Meal Plan that provides readers with four weeks' worth of menus and shopping lists so that they can take charge of their nutritional health by cooking their own meals. Each meal is accompanied by a recipe selected from dozens created and scaled for one person.

Whitfield's research on OTR drivers has been published in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association. She is a clinical dietitian at a Level One trauma center hospital in the Chicago suburbs and teaches nutrition at the university level. Don Jacobson provides marketing support for companies dealing with the freight and logistics industry. A writer and noted outdoor cook, he is the author of four books including "The One Pan Gourmet" and "The One Pan Gourmet Cooks Lite."
