Lowclearances.com has rolled out a new database of more than 3,200 low clearances on major and minor roads in the U.S.
Route1 works with GPS systems from Garmin, TomTom and others.

The new Route1 point of interest database provides drivers with an audible warning system when approaching a low bridge. The height of the bridge is shown on the screen, allowing the driver to continue or take an alternative route that avoids the height restriction. The alerts can be set to trigger miles ahead of the potential hazard, giving the driver the time to take any necessary diversion to avoid the hazard.

In addition, the driver can customize alerts for all bridges or only for the bridges that are lower than the height of the vehicle. If the driver is diverted away from the pre-planned route, the GPS software will automatically configure a new route and will continue to issue clearance alerts to the driver.

"Professional drivers have an extensive knowledge of low clearance locations and plan their routes carefully to avoid problems," said Randy Dupont of lowclearances.com. "But if a driver is diverted onto unfamiliar roads, he needs a backup system to protect himself and the vehicle, not to mention any low bridges that may be encountered."
