At Daimler Truck North America’s Madras proving grounds, the 2025 Western Star ‘Star Nation Experience’ brought together six vocational operators and two participants from the gaming community from across the U.S. and Canada for three days of skill-driven competition and technology immersion.

The Get-Tough Challenge
Operators stepped into the cabs of Western Star 47X and 49X trucks for a series of real-world events:
Backing challenges up “Mount Madras”
Precision gravel spreads at the rock quarry
A head-to-head American Truck Simulator competition
Each event not only tested driver ability but also showcased the Detroit Assurance suite of safety features in a controlled environment.
Returning as a team captain, Casey LaDelle reflected on what makes Star Nation unique:
“You realize the people behind the scenes ARE the Western Star brand, and the trucks are the product of the passion for what they do.”
Passing the Torch
For 2023 champion Tatiana DeYoung, coaching was as rewarding as competing:
“I like how I’m able to be a part of their experience and let them know what I know, and then them just take it and apply it however they would like.”
Her role underscored the event’s blend of mentorship and competition, a chance for newer participants to learn from veterans in both skill and approach.
Celebrating the Backbone of Vocational Trucking
Event lead Alex Martin-Banzer, brand manager for Western Star, says Star Nation is built to honor the drivers who power the industry:
“We really look at all the winners that are here as the backbone of the vocational industry and we want to celebrate them. We want to bring back that camaraderie and that pride in this business.”
From behind-the-scenes access to Daimler’s facilities to outdoor excursions and fireside chats with executives, the event blended high-tech demonstrations with personal connection.
When the dust settled, one team took the top spot (watch to find out who), but the event’s true success was in building stronger ties between operators, technology, and the brand.
