Volvo Trucks is recalling certain 2014 and 2015 VNL models over a defect in the trim panel that may restrict the trailer hand brake from returning to the off position.

The defect affects 2,863 trucks manufactured from May 31, 2011 through Dec. 1, 2014 in the U.S. and Canada.

If the trailer brake is not allowed to fully disengage, the brakes may drag, according to Volvo. This may cause the wheel end to overheat and potentially cause a wheel end fire or tire blowout.

Volvo said it has received no reports of wheel end fires or tire blowouts as a result of the defect, but the company is treating the recall as a proactive measure to protect the public and customers from the potential risks the defect poses.

Dealers have been notified of the recall and repair instructions are tentatively scheduled to be sent out no later than Oct. 13. Owners of affected trucks will be notified by mail. Those notices are scheduled to be sent out on or before Oct. 13.

For any questions about the defect, contact Volvo Trucks’ Regulatory Affairs Department at vtna.regulatoryaffairs@volvo.com.
