Faulty ECU Software Recall Grows to Half a Million Trucks
Half a million medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks have now been recalled because a faulty ECU could cause truck safety systems to malfunction.

A faulty electronic control unit prompted the recall of a large number of trucks from Mack, Volvo, and now International.

UPDATE 12/13/2024: Another 220,000-plus trucks, this time from Paccar, have been added to the list of models recalled because of a faulty electronic control unit that can affect advanced safety systems.
The new recall affects certain 2021-2025 Peterbilt and Kenworth vehicles equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units. Electrical noise and low signal to the power line carrier may cause the ECU to incorrectly process commands or stop functioning.
That can affect the operation of advanced safety systems such as automatic traction control, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, active cruise control, and collision mitigation.
This is in addition to the more than 105,000 International Trucks and nearly 190,000 Volvo and Mack Trucks recalled for the same ECU problem.

International Trucks Added to Faulty ECU Recall
UPDATE 11/11/2024: More than 105,000 International Trucks have been recalled for the same ECU problem that resulted in the recall of nearly 190,000 Volvo and Mack Trucks.
The problem is faulty software in an ECU, which can affect the operation of advanced safety systems such as automatic traction control, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, active cruise control, and collision mitigation.
International Motors is recalling certain 2021-2024 Lonestar, 2021-2025 RH, HV, MV, LT, HX, and 2022 Prostar vehicles equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units. Electrical noise and low signal to the power line carrier may cause the ECU to incorrectly process commands or stop working.
International will work with Bendix to reprogram the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 23. Owners may contact International customer service at 1-800-448-7825.

Nov. 6, 2024 -- Nearly 190,000 Volvo and Mack trucks from model years 2020 through 2025 have been recalled because of a problem with Bendix electronic control units that could affect the operation of advanced safety systems.
The recalled trucks are equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units. Electrical noise and low signal to the power line carrier may cause the ECU to incorrectly process commands or stop working.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall notice explains that safety systems that depend on the ECU, such as automatic traction control, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, active cruise control, and collision mitigation may have diminished or lost functionality.
Volvo Trucks North America is recalling 126,649 2020-2025 VN, VAH, VHD and VNR Electric trucks.
Mack Trucks is recalling 60,450 2020-2025 Anthem, Granite, TerraPro and Pinnacle vehicles.
A possible warning is if the ABS warning lamp is illuminated when an ABS fault is detected or when the ABS stops operating.
Dealers will reprogram the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 13, 2024.
