While a proposed wildcat strike fizzled and Overnite delivered freight despite Teamsters picketing six locations, Argentina sent troops to thwart a massive trucker's strike that threatened to create food and fuel shortages.

According to published reports, roads all over Argentina were blocked by hundreds of parked trucks as part of a strike by the freight truck union CATAC. The drivers of about 280,000 trucks were expected to join the strike. The strike was called to protest a tax passed last year of 1% to 1.5% on the value of vehicles, boats and aircraft. Revenue is intended to raise teacher salaries.
The government sent military police to several locations to restore normal transit of people and goods.
Buenos Aires' fruit and vegetables market experienced supplies Tuesday 80% lower than normal. The head of an independent service station network predicted fuel shortages.
