After months of trying to convince FedEx Freight drivers in Middletown, Pennsylvania to join the Teamsters, the union withdrew the election petition on Thursday, the day before vote.

However, all indications are a vote by workers at the FedEx Freight’s South Brunswick, New Jersey, terminal was still set to happen on Friday, Oct 31.

FedEx contends the union would only take this action of canceling the vote if it recognized it would not win. No official reason for canceling the election has been given by the Teamsters.

“We are extremely grateful to our team members at North Harrisburg for their support of the company," said William J. Logue, President and CEO of FedEx Freight. "We continue to believe that the attempted Teamster interference in our working relationship is unnecessary and unwelcome. We look forward to building on our direct relationships and further enhancing our employee and customer experiences.”

Earlier this month the Teamsters scored its first win in its attempts to organize FedEx workers, when a group of 47 drivers at FedEx Freight's East Philadelphia terminal in Croydon, Pennsylvania, voted to join the union in a 26-18 vote.

The union also has been trying to organize drivers at rival less-than-truckload carrier Con-way, where the union has won two out of the past four elections, the first marking the first time workers at the trucking company have voted to join the union.
