The Florida Foreign Trade Assn. is looking for solutions to congestion problems at the Port of Miami.
South Florida's busiest seaport often sees trucks lines up at the gates, with highways to downtown Miami clogged, reports the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Traffic delays were among the reasons independent truckers staged a nearly two-week strike at the seaport early last year.
The Florida Foreign Trade Assn. is circulating a survey that suggests, among other options, extending operating hours at the port or working split-shifts on peak cargo days, Thursdays and Fridays.
Port of Miami officials say already have increased gate hours and installed computerized scanners for ID cards to help get truckers through the gates faster. It also plans to open a fifth gate.
The Miami port handled a record 7.8 million tons of freight last fiscal year, up 12 percent from the previous year. Cargo volumes continue to rise this year, although at a more moderate pace.
