Ryder System Inc. said it will equip 5,500 Dedicated Contract Carriage trucks and tractors with PrePass, giving its drivers the opportunity to bypass weigh stations.

"We are very pleased to welcome Ryder to the PrePass family," said Walt Keeney, president of Food Express and chairman of HELP Inc., the public-private partnership sponsoring PrePass. "Having a quality company like Ryder decide to deploy PrePass sends a strong signal throughout our industry."
"The decision to deploy the PrePass system was simple," said David Bouchard, vice president of Dedicated Contract Carriage Operations for Ryder. "By enabling drivers to avoid long lines at weigh stations, they can keep moving on the roads safely and better serve the needs of Ryder's customers."
PrePass, the nation's first commercially-available, coast-to-coast, electronic pre-clearance weigh station bypass system, enables qualified fleet operators to comply electronically with state weight, safety and credential requirements while traveling at highway speeds.
ACS, a provider of business process and information technology outsourcing solutions, is the system integrator and operator of the PrePass system.
Only fleet operators with proven safety records qualify to participate in PrePass, and participation is voluntary.
As qualified trucks approach a PrePass-equipped inspection facility, an in-cab transponder identifies the vehicle to a computer, which certifies compliance with state safety and credential requirements. Vehicles in compliance receive a green light on the in-cab transponder instructing them to bypass the inspection facility without ever slowing down.
Ryder's DCC service is a customized bundle of transportation management services for the delivery of a customer's products that includes fulltime and seasonal drivers, trucks, fleet management and maintenance services.
Launched in California in 1995, PrePass is operational at 232 locations with more coming soon. To date, 24 states have deployed PrePass. They include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
