Independent truckers in Quebec are asking the province to limit the number of newcomers to the trucking industry because they can't make a decent living.

The Quebec Federation of Labour, which represents Quebec truckers, says there are too many players and wants the province to allow owner-operators to form an association, which is illegal under current provincial labor laws.
Last month, truckers blocked roads to protest the situation, as well as high fuel prices.
The Canadian Independent Truckers Cooperative says rates are so low, many independent truckers can't afford to keep their trucks in proper working order. That comment was in response to a recent inspection blitz. Road inspectors stopped about 200 commercial trucks. Half failed to meet safety standards, and 24 were put out of service. Half of the problem trucks were American, half Canadian, but they all tended to be run by independent owner-operators.
