According to station WGAL, Pennsylvania State Police are making a special effort to enforce traffic regulations along a four-lane road in Lebanon County in Pa. which truckers use as an alternative to Interstates 81 and 78.
Route 22, which parallels the two interstates, has a 55 mph speed limit, cross roads, stop signs and short exit ramps. In the last 18 months, accidents on the road have claimed 11 lives.
Excessive speed has been cited as part of the problem. Police clocked one motorist at 107 mph and another, who was talking on a cell phone at the time, at 97 mph.
According to a state police spokesman, trucks with safety violations also appear to be part of the problem. Inspectors claim they found nearly every truck they stopped had a safety violation regarding brakes, shocks or tires.
Police said the crackdown will continue on random days throughout the year.
