Police in the Ontario cities of Ottawa and Toronto are taking aggressive measures to keep motorists from driving too slowly in the fast lane.

In one problem area of Ottawa, seven officers assigned to the patrol team recently charged 51 motorists with driving too slowly.
Toronto Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Eric Woolley says that because of their slow speed, the chances of a crash increase when other drivers are forced to pass on the right. Slowpoke drivers are also a leading cause of road rage.
Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, left-lane bandits may be charged with three offenses: driving at a less-than-normal speed in the fast lane, driving unnecessarily slowly in any lane and preventing another car from passing. Slowpoke drivers may be fined $110 and may lose up to three points on their licenses.
