For the third time, Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. was named to the Inbound Logistics' annual list of green supply chain partners.


The magazine's editors chose 75 companies offering a range of logistics services -- including 3PLs, truckers, ports and forklifts -- they determined to be truly walking the walk when it comes to commitment to supply chain sustainability. The G75 list was published in its June issue.

"As a company, we've made a promise to ourselves and to our customers that we will continue to work to find solutions that are not only right for our business, but also the environment," said Jayna Long, Old Dominion's manager of sustainability. "Our work in sustainability is not finished.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Old Dominion has implemented a number of green measures for its fleet of more than 5,500 tractors, and throughout its nationwide network of more than 218 service centers. These measures include installing idle shut down timers to turn off tractors after five minutes of idling and the deployment of on-board driver monitoring systems and driver training programs to improve driver efficiency.

In addition to system-wide recycling of oil and antifreeze, the company is upgrading the lighting systems at its service centers and support facilities, a move that has resulted in up to a 20-25% reduction in total energy use at those facilities.

In December, Old Dominion installed rooftop solar panels on its Vault Logistics warehouse in Thomasville, NC, the first solar panel system in the company's nationwide network. The 1.8 megawatt system can produce more than 2.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year -- enough to offset more than 90% of the building's annual energy costs, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by a projected 1,547 metric tons.
