Dec. 23 – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a list of safety recalls announced in November.
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with Federal safety standards is found. The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a particular make and model may be subject to the
recall.
Freightliner has recalled 441 1998 FLN model trucks because some door hinge fasteners contain a defect that doesn’t meet federal requirements. Freightliner also has a recall of 348 Freightliner FLN106 trucks made between 1996-1998. This recall involves heavy duty trucks equipped with automatic transmissions and an optional shift selector with a park brake position. These vehicles do not comply with the emergency brake system requirements of FMVSS No. 121, "Air Brake System." If the secondary air system is drained, the spring brakes will apply and the ability to apply, release, and modulate the service brakes will be lost. Increased braking effort will be required, increasing the risk of a crash.
Owner notification of both Freightliner recalls began this month. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Freightliner at 1-800-547-0712.
Navistar International has recalled more than 15,000 Model 3400, 3800 and 4700 medium-duty trucks from 1998-1999 that are equipped with International T444E diesel engines. The high-pressure oil line for the fuel injection system can chafe against the air cooler crossover pipe. If the chafing rubs through the hose, it can cause a sudden loss of oil and loss of power in the engine.
Navistar also has recalled nearly 5,500 Model 9100, 9200, 9300 and 9400 heavy-duty trucks from 1997-1999 equipped with the Spicer SPL170 55mm center bearing package. The end yoke retaining nut can loosen causing the drive line to vibrate and separate
from the vehicle.
In addition, Navistar has recalled more than 22,000 Model 3400, 3600, 3800, 4700, RE and 1652 units from 1997-1998 equipped with T444E diesel engines. A fuel leak can
occur because of over-crimping of the hose end fittings on the hose from the regulator to the left head and the hose from the fuel transfer pump to the regulator. Fuel leakage could result in fire.
International brand owners who do not receive the free remedies within a reasonable time should contact Navistar at 1-800-448-7825.

More than 100,000 new trucking companies enter the industry each year, but regulators manage to audit only a fraction of them. That churn creates opportunities for inexperienced startups — and for “chameleon carriers” that shut down after safety violations and reappear under new identities.
