The new Route 66-themed I-44 Conway Welcome Center at Mile Marker 111 west of Conway, Mo., is scheduled to open Monday, May 4, at 11 a.m. central time with a grand opening ceremony.
The I-44 Conway Rest Area was closed in June 2008. The new facility will have 75 truck parking spaces on each side of I-44 - about triple the old capacity. Picnic shelters, pet walk areas and a playground give all travelers a respite from the road.
In a nod to area history and lore, a Route 66 theme was chosen for the Welcome Center. References to the "Mother Road" can be found in the architecture, signs and displays on the grounds. In Missouri, I-44 largely follows or parallels the old Route 66.
