The New Brunswick and Maine governments have chosen the Calais Industrial Park as the site of a proposed new border crossing station
near the towns of St. Stephen, N.B., and Calais, Maine.
The Calais-St. Stephen crossing is the eighth-busiest truck crossing between the United States and Canada. Currently, trucks must use city streets to approach the crossing, which contributes to congestion and delays.
Government officials said the Calais Industrial Park option was chosen because it will have less economic impact than other alternatives. It can be reached from the current junction of the St. Stephen truck route with Church Street in St. Stephen and is compatible with plans for upgrading Route 1 in New Brunswick.
The project will move forward with the design of a new bridge and highway links to bring traffic to the new station.
