Beginning Wednesday night, July 13, the Maryland State Highway Administration will close up to three lanes on southbound I-95/I-495 on the Capital Beltway at the MD 201 Bridge, Kenilworth Avenue, weather permitting.


SHA will begin with a single right lane closure at 8 p.m. and progress to a three-lane closure by 10 p.m. with one lane open to traffic. The overnight lane closures will be in place Sunday through Thursday nights for approximately two weeks to remove the existing concrete 'deck' on the bridge. Crews will re-open all lanes by 5 a.m. each morning.

After midnight, SHA may implement temporary 15 minute total closures as needed. In addition, crews will close one of two northbound lanes on the MD 201 Bridge to protect motorists during the demolition work. Drivers may use the ramps to MD 201, however, they will encounter one available lane of traffic on the northbound side.

SHA recommends motorists consider MD 410 (East West Highway), MD 193 (Greenbelt Road), US 50 (John Hanson Highway), US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) or US 29 (Columbia Pike) to avoid the Capital Beltway / Kenilworth Avenue interchange during the temporary night closures. SHA will use cones, barrels and variable message signs to guide drivers through the work zone.
