Some of the heaviest rains occurred early Monday night, with reports of more than 4.5 inches of rain downtown, the second highest level on record for 24 hours. Southfield, on the city’s northwest side, received 6.25 inches in just over 12 hours, according to the Weather Channel.
More than 1,000 vehicles have been abandoned, according to WWJ radio, with Warren reportedly the center of the worst of the rainfall and flooding.
The Michigan State Police is advising people to avoid the Detroit area due to impassible roads, while the Michigan DOT warns each flooded area or roadway will have to be cleaned and inspected before it can be opened.
