Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) will resign his seat in Congress effective October 30, according to published news reports. He has wielded the speaker’s gavel for nearly five years.
Rep. Boehner decided to step down in the face of threats from more than 30 Republicans to vote no confidence in his speaker's position.
His resignation takes that political fight off the table, freeing him to push through a government-funding bill next week that funds Planned Parenthood and averts a government shutdown.
If that does happen, then trucking may see Congress turn more quickly to other pressing business— not the least of which would be passing a fully funded multi-year highway bill by the end of 2015.
Expected to succeed Boehner is House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), currently the No. 2 GOP leader in the lower chamber.
