The Georgia Motor Trucking Assn. (GMTA) has endorsed PrePass, the nation's first commercially available, coast-to-coast electronic pre-clearance weigh station bypass system.
Georgia becomes the 27th state trucking association to endorse the system. "PrePass is an important productivity improvement for Georgia's motor carrier industry and the companies they serve," said Ed Crowell, GMTA's executive director. "By enabling state enforcement officials to focus on unsafe carriers, all motorists will benefit from improved safety."
PrePass is a sophisticated technology that enables qualified motor carriers to comply electronically with state weight, safety and credential requirements while traveling at highway speeds. Only motor carriers with proven safety records qualify to participate in PrePass, and participation is voluntary.
As qualified trucks approach a PrePass-equipped inspection facility, an in-cab transponder identifies the vehicle to a computer, which certifies compliance with state safety and credential requirements. Vehicles in compliance receive a green light on the in-cab transponder instructing them to bypass the inspection facility without ever slowing down.
According to Crowell, the association selected PrePass over the option of a state-run alternative because:
-- It is a turnkey system that can be deployed at no cost to the state
-- Motor carrier data confidentiality is assured
-- The system enjoys widespread support, with more than 214,000 participating vehicles.
ACS is the system integrator and operator of the PrePass system. ACS is a provider of business process and information technology outsourcing solutions to commercial and government clients, including more than 230 state and local government clients Launched in California in 1995, PrePass is operational at 228 locations with an additional 39 sites committed to open soon.
