The federal government says there are long-term problems that need to be addressed at the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel crossing the border between the United States and Canada.

According to the Detroit News, the General Accounting Office (the investigative arm of Congress) has issued a report looking at the crossing. The report found traffic bottlenecks and not enough lanes and inspection points. It outlined possible solutions for making traffic move more smoothly across the border.
The big holdup is the bridge cargo inspection plaza on the U.S. side, the GAO found. Bridge officials told the paper they’re waiting for the General Services Administration to sign off on an improvement project. The corresponding facility on the Canadian side is twice as large and can handle three times as many trucks.
Other proposals in the GAO report include a permanent X-ray machine to scan trucks, and automated license plate reading devices such as those being used at the Mexican border.
