French truck drivers blocked oil refineries and fuel depots nationwide for a second day Tuesday to protest high fuel prices, causing fuel rationing and shortages in some areas.
According to reports from the Associated Press, truckers' union representatives met with government officials, but talks ending early this morning were not a success. The truckers want the government to cut fuel taxes.
The protest by truckers, farmers, ambulance drivers, forklift operators and others began Monday. By last night, it involved thousands of vehicles.
French truckers say the cost of diesel fuel has risen 40% in the past year to about $2.55 per gallon, compared to a current average of $1.58 per gallon in the United States. France has the second-highest fuel taxes in the European Union.
